Overclocking

Well here's where things go worse. I did applaud the extreme stability of the board but then the RAM chips on the vanilla GeForce2 MX outright SUCKS. I don't know who decided to save off on the ram chips but these are really bad performers. Anyway, as I said earlier, the card is underclocked by default. I wonder why? Anyway, I tested the core and they were good enough to go to 200 mhz but the ram was stuck at 175mhz or lower. Now that really sucks.

Quake 3 1.17

I took benchmarks of the card running at 166 mhz and 143 mhz memory speeds.

How low can you go? This is boring. The gains from overclocking (to NVIDIA spec speed) aren't much. See as the performance dies as the limit is brought down on the memory bandwidth. And they are thinking of using 64-bit SDR on these things? Utter madness.

On a more serious note, if you're going to buy an MX for a non-DIYer, I suggest you get a different brand. See the MX143? Now that's your vanilla Gainward. The MX166 is everyone else's vanilla. Who would want an underclocked board? Well I'm sure not your grandmother. Unless it's free of course =).
