Final Words

Battle Realms is simply a fantastic game. It's something refreshing in a genre full of boring clones and mediocre sequels. It's a well-polished real-time strategy game.. a must buy for those that cut their teeth on games such as StarCraft, Warcraft, and Red Alert and cannot get enough real-time strategy. There may be some issues with the AI but this doesn't stop it from being great. Everything else is eye-candy. Though a longer single player and campaigns featuring the Wolf and Lotus clan would have helped too. A balance between micromanaged combat and economic management would grab more players and make this game well-rounded.

On the technical point of view, Liquid did a great job. Graphically, Battle Realms is right up there with the best looking RTS games of all time. The game exudes style, polish, and quality from every pixel. The in-game sound is great. The economy is different, but still easy to understand. The balance between unit producing and resource gathering is also new, but it works well. Unit Alchemy is great, especially with units that differ so drastically. Battle Realms should win some awards for innovation with their combat and unit generation systems.

If, however, you have become accustomed to certain features found in more recent real-time games that allow for better unit control, Battle Realms may be a little frustrating. But if you are dedicated and willing to stick with it, and are willing to learn the keyboard hotkeys for executing group commands, you'll be rewarded with a highly entertaining game with lots of action and graphical wonder.

I whole-heartedly recommend Battle Realms to RTS fans out there. If you’re a micro/macromanager, and would rather spend time building expansions than casting combat spells, then this game will suit your needs. If you liked squad-based tactical games, or smaller-scale RTS games then you’ll like Battle Realms. If you’re slow with hotkeys, or can’t handle high-stress battles with a lot of spell-casting, then check the demo out before getting the game.
